The Joy of Christmas Shopping in Broadway

Our guests often comment that Christmas shopping in Broadway is more interesting that in their (often much larger) home town. The key to it all seems to lie in the way that Broadway has kept so many smaller shops and independent retailers. If you add in all the charm of a Cotswold village, and the convenience of shopping along a single, traditional High Street, it’s no wonder that many of our guests come back every December simply to get ahead with their Christmas shopping.

It’s also no surprise that Broadway was recently named in an American Express survey, as one of the the top 5 locations for independent shops. Broadway came ahead of places such as The Lanes in Brighton and Magdalene Street in Cambridge.

Here’s our quick guide to just some of the retailers in Broadway. Who knows, we might even inspire some gift ideas!

Cotswold Court in Broadway is our neighbour, a great destination for shopping, and the retail hotspot of the village. Just step out of our front door and turn right! Here you can find shops such as Betty and Violet, supplier of vintage and antique clothing, accessories and books. We hear a lot of good comments about La Bulle and their handbag range. They also sell clothing, and beautiful scarves, gloves and other accessories. Nearby, Sew U Knit is difficult for any crafter to stay out of for too long.

Continue up the High Street for Rikki Tikki, a wonderful, old school, toy shop, absolutely crammed with inspirational and fun gift ideas. The choice included products from Le Toy Van, Siku, Lego, Jellycat, Schleich, Frugi clothing, Orchard Toys and Djeco - not to mention plenty of inexpensive stocking fillers.

Continue, past the mighty Broadway Deli. The Deli is an Aladdin’s Cave of fine food, with a great collection of their own pickles, plus all those other good Christmas delicious things that make the holiday so special.

The journey up the High Street continues with the inspiring Blandford Books, then further up the High Street to the Cotswold Chocolate shop. The highly acclaimed Cotswold Distillery shop offers stunning, award-winning whisky and gin (try one in our bar!). A special mention for their Cotswolds Cloudy Christmas Gin, a festive twist on gin, with botanicals that include clementine and cardamom.

You might also explore the little lane up past the Sue Ryder shops to discover Hicks and Hydes, with its great collection of country clothing, leather goods and all things dog-related.

Crossing the High Street, you’ll pass some established business such as Oka Direct, The Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Cotswold Trading as you head back to the hotel. You probably won’t be able to miss the The Man Cave, which has really taken off in the last few years. It’s a place to release your inner ‘Clarkson’, with everything from upcycled bar and furniture pieces made from car or airplane parts, to retro gaming, clothing items and men’s accessories.

The Goldsmithy is a three-generation jewellery and goldsmithing institution in Broadway. It’s a ‘must see’ if you have a commission in mind or want to see their range of contemporary jewellery. After all, a lot of couples do seem to get engaged in and around Christmas!

Margie Shiers opened Scents on the Green in 2020, bringing her experience and expertise in curating and retailing fine fragrances to the village. Inspiration and advice flows in this beautiful shop. If you feel that buying perfume should be a personal experience - look no further than this wonderful shop.

Galleries and Antique Shops

For this quick retailers' summary, we’ve not listed all of the galleries and antique shops in Broadway. You’ll find them all easily, dotted along the High Street. There’s a good listing on the local Broadway website and none are more than a short walk from the Broadway Hotel.

After a fun day of exploring and shopping, we’ll be on hand with afternoon tea or a pre-dinner cocktail ready. Best news of all? A December stay coincides with some great offers on room rates at The Broadway. Details here!
